Know the benefits of boredom

Until some time ago, the person who openly stated that he was bored aroused a certain suspicion around him. Luckily, this trend has been losing followers and, today, there are more currents that encourage boredom to be imposed on our stressful lives. Why has this 180 degree turn occurred? The answer is very simple: the multiple benefits of boredom for the body and the health of people have been discovered. Therefore, faced with the dilemma of doing something or spending time getting bored, perhaps you should start opting for the second, especially after reading the benefits of occasional boredom.

Benefit of boredom: give yourself time

The American writer and critic, Clifton Paul Fadiman (1904-1999), enunciated a phrase loaded with much truth: “Being bored at the right time is a sign of intelligence.” And it is that boredom can be something quite productive and that can help us change certain habits and behaviors. Surely this situation that we are going to present to you sounds familiar to you: you arrive at your house twelve hours after leaving it, with a dull head, with a pounding heart and with a feeling of anxiety that makes it difficult for you to breathe. Drop everything! it’s time to park your worries, release stress and get bored…Through boredom you will be able to reconnect with yourself, and once you have achieved it, do not stay on the sofa. Take the opportunity to carry out an activity that produces inner well-being: go for a walk, read a book, draw, play chess… and think, you are not getting bored, you are giving yourself valuable time.

Boredom, an opportunity to get to know yourself better

You decide what to call that boredom and how to manage it, whether in a positive or negative way. There are people -those who are still not used to doing this relaxing activity- who consider it a waste of time; but there are also those who see this option of getting bored for a moment to get to know each other better, to investigate what moves them in life, what direction they want to take, and even an opportunity to learn how to manage their time and to organize themselves.

A moment of change

Poorly managed boredom can lead to a state of listlessness, apathy, and even depression. So practicing boredom for a long time is inadvisable, but not doing it occasionally, as we explained at the beginning. We cannot lose sight of the fact that boredom is a moment of change, because it is a space in which you can reflect on your current moment and ask yourself about alternatives to that moment.

Encourages your creativity with boredom

What do you do when you’re bored, with nothing to do and looking lost? Daydreaming, an exercise that will allow you to exploit that creativity that you carry within you and that will be an impulse to achieve your goals. And it is that when you daydream and visualize yourself in a situation that you want, you are much more likely to come true than when you do not even let it take shape.

Yawn through boredom

Another of the things that the person who is sitting on the sofa or looking at the hands of the clock does is relax the mind. The brain is exposed to a lot of stimuli on a daily basis (shop lights, car beeps, mobile music…), so taking time for the brain to relax can generate a lot of peace and tranquility. But, also, when we are not doing anything, we tend to yawn, a gesture that releases the tension in the muscles of the face, allowing oxygen to enter the brain.

Positive boredom vs. negative boredom

Finally, we must not forget that boredom, as long as it is occasional and done in a positive way, can bring us many benefits for our brain and our health, but we must be very careful with negative boredom, the one that occurs over a long period of time and can trigger a situation of stress or anxiety.

Practice boredom but, like everything in life, do it in its proper measure and you will get great benefits.
